Groundskeeper

Department: Operations
Location: Denver, CO

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for the care and cultivation of the landscaping and grounds on the historic 20 acre Clayton Early Learning campus through all seasons of the year. Ensure integrity of the campus and facilities by performing routine building maintenance and providing for its safety and security. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Maintain the aesthetic appearance of the grounds. Cut the lawn using hand, power or riding mower; trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls. Plant grass, flowers, trees and shrubs; prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth. Spray lawns, trees and shrubs with fertilizers and insecticides. Rake, mulch, weed and prune the grounds as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance procedures on equipment utilized in groundskeeping. Maintain and monitor the sprinkler system. Water plants and grass as needed.  Promptly address issues and report them to supervisor.
  • Maintain the highest standard of safety and sanitation for pedestrians, staff, families and children at all times through performing routine grounds upkeep and by promptly addressing concerns. Sweep walkways of debris. Cut down tree limbs that pose dangers. Remove trash and empty trash receptacles. Shovel snow from entryways, walkways and parking lots. Sprinkle ice melt to keep people from falling. 
  • Preserve campus assets by troubleshooting issues and performing routine interior and exterior repairs. Carry out preventive maintenance of facilities and equipment under general supervision. Complete work orders per maintenance requisitions in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure for the ongoing safety and security of the campus, its buildings and grounds. Respond to safety or security issues and report any incidents in accordance with department procedures.

OTHER DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure for the quality of the facilities and grounds.
  • Drives company vehicles as needed.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

Minimum education: High school diploma or GED.

Work experience in positions similar or related to this job: 1-2 years in related experience

Certificates or licenses: Valid Driverís License and applicable insurance

Special professional and/or job-related requirements:  

Current PPD-TB and physical examination, background check, and compliance with other regulatory requirements as applicable.

Special training or experience:

 

EQUIPMENT USED: Mower, edger, hand tools, power tools, company vehicles, grass trimmer, blower, snow blower, dollies, hand carts, computer, copier, telephone and other similar business/office/maintenance equipment.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Conduct activities involving stooping, kneeling, bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, climbing, standing and walking on a frequent basis and sitting on a moderate basis.
  • Grasp and manipulate office, maintenance equipment and similar other hand and power tools and materials.
  • Work with hands above shoulder height with a weight up to 25 pounds.
  • Work with arms extended at shoulder height with a weight up to 25 pounds.
  • Lift, carry, push and/or pull a burden weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Participate in routine conversation in person or via telephone, and distinguish telephone, radio/pager signals, alarms, and other auditory tones in a noisy environment.
  • Distinguish small objects at near and far distances in conditions of bright or low light.  Distinguish color and depth, and see objects in a wide field of vision.
  • Respond to unanticipated situations involving activities of young children ranging in age from 0 to 5 years.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

This position is classified as a Category I risk within the Clayton work environment. The majority of this position's duties are performed within both an indoor and outdoor environment. Employees in Category I are those whose primary job responsibilities involve daily potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues, or potential exposure to spills or splashes of blood and involves exposure to medical/health conditions of known and unknown origin. See exposure control plan for further details. The incumbent may be exposed to sun, loud noises, fumes, odors, dust, and mechanical and electrical hazards. The incumbent utilizes potentially dangerous hand and power tools and equipment on a daily basis. The incumbent may be exposed to adverse weather and congested traffic conditions. May be exposed to the threat of direct or indirect violence/conflict by other individuals, and other unanticipated circumstances associated with the profession.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Interpret/understand intermediate level information received as well as prepares and transmits it.  Involves ongoing interaction with other employees, the general public, and children and parents within the community.  May involve interaction with persons whose first language is not English.
  • Read and understand intermediate level written materials and compose information/instruction in written form.
  • Remember schedules, programs, policies, and other details, and apply good time management and organization skills.
  • Understand and perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Apply basic to intermediate level analytical skills essential for risk assessment and troubleshooting responsibility.
  • Apply basic to intermediate level problem-solving skills essential in developing solutions for unanticipated issues and challenges.
  • Remain calm and calm others in an emergency, stressful and/or confrontational situation.
  • Identify conflict and take the steps necessary to resolve the issues or inform those who can.
  • Work with other people taking into consideration, among the dynamics, their needs, their personal styles, and the requirements of their jobs.
  • Understand and apply basic to intermediate level organizational theories and practices essential in the development and implementation of policies, practices, programs, and employee communications.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to speak a foreign language such as Spanish, Hmong, or Vietnamese.
